Medicare for All

Congressman Jimmy Gomez has been a cosponsor of the Medicare for All Act since he was first elected in 2017, and he is a founding member of the Medicare for All Caucus. Jimmy grew up without health insurance and knows firsthand the burden a family experiences when they don’t have access to quality, affordable healthcare. He doesn’t want anyone to go through what his family went through. That’s why Jimmy, Senator Bernie Sanders and the Progressive Caucus are fighting to make Medicare for All a reality.

Housing Affordability and Renters Rights

The cost of rent is skyrocketing, and working people in Los Angeles and across the U.S. need a voice in Congress who will tackle this problem. That’s why Jimmy has made fighting for more affordable housing, and keeping people securely housed and off the streets a top priority.

In 2023, Jimmy Gomez created the first-ever Congressional Renters Caucus to fight for affordable living and bring renters’ concerns directly to the halls of Congress, and he is a leader in the fight to build more affordable housing and help people experiencing homelessness get the services they need. From leading the charge on the Rent Relief Act that will put monthly payments directly in the pockets of renters and introducing legislation to end rental junk fees, to demanding the White House prioritize housing policy and protesting on the Capitol steps to successfully extend the eviction moratorium with Reps. Cori Bush, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley, Jimmy puts renters and working families first.

Green New Deal and Combating Climate Change

Jimmy knows that climate change poses an existential threat to humanity, and that bold legislative action is needed to reverse the environmental, health and economic damage to communities before it’s too late. Jimmy is a cosponsor of the Green New Deal with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and his three bills to increase green energy efficiency in homes and on the road have become law. Additionally, in Congress, Jimmy helped secure over $300 million to clean up a polluted river in California and sponsored bills to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a 100 percent renewable energy future by 2035. Jimmy is an environmental champion who received the Green Leadership Award for “bold environmental leadership” from Green California, a coalition of over 100 environmental organizations, and he is endorsed by the Sierra Club.

Debt Free College, Quality Education and Student Loan Cancelation

Jimmy Gomez is a fierce advocate for canceling student debt, and he believes every student should have the opportunity to attend college without taking on debt. Jimmy is the beneficiary of a public education who attended community college and UCLA, and graduated with student loan debt himself. He knows firsthand the pressure graduates face when trying to start their lives and careers as they pay off debt, and he believes a good education can transform a person’s life if they are not burdened by hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans. That’s why, in addition to fighting for student debt cancellation, Jimmy passed his bill into law that makes years of student loan forgiveness tax-free, and he has introduced further legislation to make this tax exemption permanent.

Working Families and Jobs

Jimmy believes government should work for the people—not for big corporations or special interests. As a former labor organizer, Jimmy continues the fight against income inequality and is committed to raising the minimum wage and securing worker protections under attack. When Los Angeles unions went on strike in 2023 for better working conditions, Jimmy picketed alongside them for fairer wages and just treatment. And, as your representative, he continues to stand up with workers against corporate interests, and is leading the charge for family friendly policies like paid leave and a robust social safety net. He knows that to accomplish this goal we must ensure that billionaires pay their fair share in taxes, that’s why Jimmy sponsored the For the 99.8% Act (H.R. 4857), with Senator Bernie Sanders.

Campaign Finance Reform

Jimmy Gomez does not accept corporate PAC money, and he has been a champion of campaign finance reform in the Assembly and in Congress. Jimmy was the principal author of the California DISCLOSE Act, which expanded campaign reform and disclosures in California. He supports the overturn of Citizens United with the goal of public financing of elections. As your representative, Jimmy is the cosponsor of a bill to ban members of Congress from trading stocks, and he helped pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act—the most comprehensive anti-corruption and democracy reform bill to pass the House since Watergate. This legislation will limit the influence of big money in politics, strengthen ethics rules for public servants and create a small-donor public financing matching system.

Criminal Justice Reform and Ending Police Brutality

Jimmy Gomez believes criminal justice reform and ending police brutality must be a top priority for Congress. Jimmy is a cosponsor of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to hold police officers and departments accountable, increase transparency, make structural changes to our justice system, ban chokeholds and eliminate qualified immunity. Additionally, Jimmy has voted to pass legislation to federally decriminalize marijuana and address the outsized damage to Black and Brown communities from the so-called “War on Drugs.”

Paid Family Leave

Jimmy is a national champion on Paid Family Leave, making change for families in Los Angeles and across the nation. He authored and passed the landmark California Assembly Bill 908, the nation’s most progressive expansion of Paid Family Leave that President Obama hailed as a model for Congress. He has led his colleagues to call for an extension of paid sick days for workers in California and he is fighting to pass the Family Act, with Representative Rosa DeLauro, to implement a national paid family leave program. And, through his creation of the Dads Caucus, Jimmy is continuing to bring the concerns of working families to the forefront.

Immigration Reform

As the son of immigrants, Jimmy Gomez knows that immigration and diversity contribute to the fabric of our country and make us all better off. That’s why Jimmy introduced legislation to protect immigrant youth, and why he fights against anti-immigrant efforts each time they arise in Congress. Jimmy has voted to block efforts to ban immigrants based on religion, was one of only 19 Democrats to vote against funding Trump’s border wall, and has been a staunch advocate for prohibiting ICE from using for-profit, private detention centers since he came to Congress.He is working to implement comprehensive immigration reform, and has cosponsored legislation to end family separation at the border, increase family- and employment-based visas, and he continues to fight for our communities and bring undocumented people out of the shadows through the passage of the Dream and Promise Act.
